Jonathan Stapleton, Editor-in-chief, Professional Pensions
Welcome to Professional Pensions Trustee Senate 2026. We begin this year’s Senate with a keynote from Frank Gardner, the BBC’s Security Correspondent, exploring the geopolitical and security developments reshaping the global outlook. Drawing on his extensive experience reporting on international affairs, conflict and global security, Frank will examine the forces driving instability, the shifting balance of global power and the risks emerging for governments, businesses and institutions. He will offer a compelling perspective on what these developments could mean for markets, long-term investment and the environment in which trustees are making decisions.
Private markets continue to grow quickly within DC schemes and remain a feature for many open DB schemes and DB schemes that are running on. Drawing on the latest Schroders market surveys, this presentation will explore current views and trends across both DB and DC schemes.
It will consider how private markets solutions have evolved to meet DB and DC demand, what these strategies need to deliver for members, and the differences between the various approaches. The presentation will provide trustees with the insights they need to assess these growing strategies.
An ideal opportunity to connect with fellow trustees and relish refreshments provided by Tylney Hall, for first class company and a second to none experience!
How can a well-funded DB scheme continue to build security while creating and sharing surplus?
This session explores a practical framework for sustainable run-on, combining cashflow-driven investing, dynamic discounting and diversified return generation. Discover how schemes can protect an agreed funding buffer, make the whole portfolio work harder and retain the flexibility to pursue settlement when market conditions are attractive.
Alistair Jones updates on how pension schemes have been allocating to Insurance Linked Strategies. The opportunity for schemes to enhance potential returns, genuinely diversify risk, provide liquidity and increase social resilience from climate events has been a popular trend in recent years.
This is your chance to mingle, connect, and replenish your energy amidst the Trustee Senate's vibrant atmosphere. Join us in savouring a spread prepared to elevate your midday experience. Whether you're networking, sharing insights, or simply taking a moment to unwind; Take your seat, and enjoy!
Day 1 Boardrooms
This workshop will explore how DB and DC pension schemes can use securitised credit to enhance yields, improve diversification and support collateral management within LDI portfolios. Through practical examples, attendees will gain an understanding of key risks, liquidity considerations, governance requirements and manager selection.
In this peer-to-peer, off-the-record session, trustees will discuss the challenges they are facing, both individually and as boards, and share how they are working to overcome them. Delegates will have the chance to learn from each other's experiences across a wide range of issues, leaving with practical food for thought on how to approach these challenges.
Endgame choices have evolved significantly in recent years and continue to evolve at pace. With increasing choice and complexity, trustees need to effectively weigh up the options and make the right decisions in practice.
These sessions will recap how endgame options are evolving, explore what effective endgame decision-making looks like in practice and share strategies to help with that decision making, including:
- How use of surplus and market developments are influencing options and choices
- A “common currency” for comparing options including how sponsors think about value and trade-offs
- How illiquid assets can shape or constrain endgame strategy
